  1. Common manifestation of dementia, thought to
  2. afflict one in 20 people over 65. Attacking
  3. the brain's `grey matter', it is a disease of
  4. mental processes rather than physical
  5. function, characterized by memory loss and
  6. progressive intellectual impairment. It was
  7. first described by Alois Alzheimer 1906. The
  8. cause is unknown, although a link with high
  9. levels of aluminium in drinking water was
  10. discovered 1989. It has also been suggested
  11. that the disease may result from a defective
  12. protein circulating in the blood. There is no
  13. treatment, but recent insights into the
  14. molecular basis of the disease may aid the
  15. search for a drug to counter its effects.
